Dear AGO Friends,
Last year, Alan and I attended the 75th anniversary of the “Ground Hog” Dinner at Lyona United Methodist in rural Junction City, KS. The menu has not changed–pancakes, waffles, farm-raised ground and smoked sausage with a bowl of home-made ice cream for dessert. The event draws hundreds of people from the surrounding counties. The Lyona Church also marked its 160th anniversary as a congregation in the Spring with a special worship service and a time of music and sharing of stories. My husband, Alan, served as the pastor of Lyona Church from 1977-1981. I played the organ and directed the choir. Celebrating with this community at both the dinner and the anniversary Sunday was a time of great blessing for us.
At our recent board meeting, I discovered that the year 2020 is an anniversary year for several large church congregations in Wichita. First Presbyterian Church and First Methodist Church both celebrate their 150th anniversaries and St. James Episcopal marks its 100th year as a congregation. These three churches are served by members on our current Wichita Chapter Board. It is good that we set aside designated times and events to honor and remember our church homes(or adopted homes).
As you have time and are able, check out and plan to attend an event at an “anniversary” church. The Wichita Chapter is partnering with First Presbyterian’s Angulo Concert Series on April 18 & 19 to present Damin Spritzer in a master class and recital. The Wichita Choral Society is celebrating its 75th year with a gala concert on Sunday, April 26, 4:00 p.m. at Hillside Christian Church. Several of our members are accompanying anthems at this concert.
I hope you will make plans to attend our Winter Social on February 9.
