Meet the Executive Committee: Marlene Hallstrom

Meet the Executive Committee: Marlene Hallstrom, Class of 2017.

Editor (E): What is your current position on the Executive Committee? And how many years have you served on the committee?
Marlene (M): I am serving as a member of the Class of 2017 after a few years off of the committee while I served on the AGO National Council as Councillor for Professional Development.  Previously, I have been Dean and chair of the 2009 Region VI convention “Pipes on the Plains” which was held in Wichita.

E: Do you currently serve as an organist-music director in Wichita? If so, where and how long? And do you have any other jobs?
M: I serve as Director of Music at St. James Episcopal Church in Wichita where I play the organ, direct three choirs and help with worship planning.  This is my third year at St James.  My previous position was at Reformation Lutheran Church for ten years.  I also have a piano studio where I teach students from age 5 through adults.

E: What was your educational experience?
M: I have a bachelors degree in music education from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD; a masters degree in music education from the University of South Carolina, Columbia; and a masters degree in organ performance from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln where I studied with Quentin Faulkner and George Ritchie.

E: In your current role on the board, what would you like to see the Chapter do this year?
M: I always hope that more of our members will take advantage of the opportunities offered by the chapter, and I’d love to find a way to reach out to organists, pianists, and choir directors who are not currently members of the AGO.  My main hope is that our Pipe Organ Encounter will be wildly successful!

E: What is one of your best memories of a Wichita Chapter AGO event?
M: My best memory is of the 2009 regional convention in Wichita with its wonderful concerts, workshops, social activities and the great camaraderie for our members and the guests who attended the convention.
